The Ramakrishna Mission and The
Ramakrishna Math are the two main organizations which formed the
foundation of the worldwide spiritual movement known as the Ramkrishna
Movement or the Vedanta Movement. The Ramakrishna Mission is an
association founded by Swami Vivekanand on May 1, 1897. He was Sri
Ramakrishna's chief disciple. The objective of the mission is to spread
the missionary and philanthropic work through the combined efforts of
monastic and householder disciples. The headquarter of the mission is
near Kolkata, India. The mission emphasize on service to others and on
karmayoga. The Mission is a registered Society and its main objective is
to render welfare services undertaken with a spiritual outlook. The
mission believes that every living being is the manifestation of the
Divine. The mission's motto is "Atmano Mokshartham Jagad-hitaya
Cha" which means that for one's own salvation, and for the good
of the world.
Ram Krishna Matha
It is a religious monastic order founded by Swami Vivekananda to follow
the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna. The Ramakrishna Matha is headquartered
at Belur Math (in West Bengal, India). Ramakrishna Matha consists of
monks belonging to a monastic order for men. This was set after the
passing away of Sri Ramakrishna in 1886. The monastery serves as the
Mother House for all the monks of Ramakrishna Order who live in the
various branch centers of Ramakrishna Matha and/or the related
Ramakrishna Mission in different parts of India and the world. The main
ideals of the Matha are Self-realisation and Service to the world.
Vedanta Society
Vedanta society is founded by Swami Vivekanada in 1894. It is a part of
the Belur math, India. The society spread the message of Ramkrishna
through lectures, books, and sermons. The branches of Vedanta socirety
is spread all over the world. Some of the important place where there
are branches of this society are Newyork, Chicago, Washington, Seattle
etc.
