The year 1936 was the year of foundation of "The Divine Life Society". It was founded by the great Saint and Sage of modern times, Swami Sivananda. This Society is a glorifying example of the creative aspect of the Divinity within man. Sri Swami Sivananda built up the this Society on the principles of integrity, purity, nobility and magnanimity, by the side of River Ganga at Uttaranchal in India.

The basic purpose of the formation of this society was for resuscitating the higher values of life beyond the limitations of perceptional and cognitional evaluations of the life of a man. The ideals of the Society are very practicable and within the reach of every human being. The Society caters to the cultural needs of all kinds of people irrespective of caste, creed, position, colour and creed. Each one can tap whatever suits him or her the best according to his/her stature and spiritual or intellectual attainments.

To propagate the Name of the Lord, some of the aims of this society are as follows :
  • To publish and distribute books, pamphlets and magazines dealing with philosophy, religion and medicine in the modern scientific manner.

  • To hold and arrange spiritual discourses and conferences and frequent Sankirtans or spiritual gathering for singing and glorifying the Name of the Lord.

  • To establish training centres or societies for the practice of Yoga, for moral and spiritual Sadhanas (spiritual practices) and the revival of true culture.

  • To provide systematic training in postures (asanas), breathing exercise (pranayama), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana) and super-conscious state (samadhi).

  • To establish and run educational Institutions and medical organizations in various parts of India.

  • To help the poor, orphans and destitutes.
