Kadru in mythology is the daughter of Daksha, while the wife of
Kashyapa. As per the Adi Parva in Mahabharata, she is considered to be
the mother of the Nagas. While, according to the Ramayana, it is the
other way round where she is the daughter of Kasyapa and Krodhavasa, who
is another daughter of Daksha. Thus, she might be seen as Daksha's grand
daughter as well.
The key point about this goddess is her being a mother of "a
thousand powerful many-headed serpents, the chief amongst whom were
Sesha, Vasuki and many other fierce and venomous serpents." It is
considered twelve according to the Vishnu Purana while forty as per the
Vayu Purana. Her offspring bear the metronymic Kadraveya.
