The Ambubashi mela is one of the numerous religious fairs
celebrated with religious fervor in Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati,
Assam. This mela takes place in monsoon when thousands of Hindu
devotees from various parts of the country throng to the ancient Kamakhya
temple. Legend : It is a common belief that the reigning deity, "Maa Kamakhya" or "The Mother Shakti" goes through her cycle of menstruation every year on the seventh day of the Assamese month of Aahar which usually falls in the month of June-July. Consequently, during Ambubasi, the doors of the Kamakhya temple remain closed for three days.
